Their love story began in New York at the prestigious Actors Studio. At the time, Paul was married to Jackie Witte and navigating the early stages of his career, while Joanne was an ambitious actress from Georgia making her mark in the industry.
Fate brought them together again in 1953 when they starred in Picnic on Broadway. Their connection grew, but it wasn’t until Paul’s first marriage ended that they allowed themselves to explore their feelings fully.
After co-starring in The Long, Hot Summer (1958), Paul finalized his divorce, and the two wasted no time—marrying in Las Vegas later that year.
Unlike many Hollywood couples who thrive in the limelight, Paul and Joanne chose a quieter life in Westport, Connecticut. While both had successful acting careers, Joanne eventually prioritized family over fame, stepping back to raise their three daughters—Nell, Melissa, and Claire.
Meanwhile, Paul continued his Hollywood ascent, starring in classics like Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
